According to Paul, when Christ’s death condemned sin on the cross, the “righteous requirement of the law” was fulfilled in those who live according to the Spirit. What was Paul talking about in this complex phrase, “the righteous requirement of the law?” Apparently, this is an issue of the cross’s work that should be an experience for everyone who is a believer in Jesus the Messiah.

To “set your mind on the Spirit” is an ultimatum of Paul for the spiritual man to experience the rich realities of the spiritual life. God does not force or coerce us to “set our minds.” It is something we do according to the consecration of our hearts. An unconsecrated heart minds the “things of the flesh;” a consecrated man minds the “things of the Spirit.” Which one are you?

In Romans 8, the phrase “set your mind” occurs repeatedly. According to Paul’s understanding of the spiritual life, walking in the Spirit is very much an issue of us choosing to lean into the things of the Spirit of God. Walking in the Spirit is not an automatic lifestyle; it very much involves the believer’s will. This message explores the role the believer’s will plays after his new birth in the Holy Spirit.

The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has freed us from the penalty of sin, the indwelling person of sin, the power of sin, and from the practices of habitual sin. However, until we expire in our bodies, the residual influence of sin still remains within us as the presence of sin.

Spiritual freedom is not only an issue of the many sins we have committed but a release from an inner accusatory voice that is not the Spirit of Christ. This inner voice is called the “conscience,” and it is an issue that has to be addressed by the “law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus.” For the spiritual man, his inner conscience must be trained to hear the voice of the Spirit of Christ.

God is for you, even if nothing goes right in your life. It is not an indication that you are back under the condemnation of God when life falls apart, and you experience suffering. All believers in Christ Jesus will have difficulties in life. However, we must be sure to understand that problems do not reinterpret the character of God nor alter our standing in Him. In Christ, we can experience tribulation, but never condemnation.

Being “in Christ” seems to have been a favorite phrase used by the apostle Paul. Surely, being “in Christ” was more than a theological term to him; it had to be an experiential reality! At the heart of the Gospel is not just the forgiveness we receive because of Christ, but the filling we receive because of His indwelling. Is there anything sweeter than the spiritual reality of being “in Christ?”

At the heart of the gospel is the beautiful phrase from Romans 8:1, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ.” The gospel is not an issue of doing better by either the law of Moses or some law we invent of our own accord.
