The closing verses of Romans 8 carry the tone of a super confident believer in his God. He categorically taunts every negative influence in the universe and rhetorically asks whether it has any ability whatsoever to remove the dynamic of love between believers and their God. Romans 8 climaxes with the love of God towards His children and their reciprocal love towards Him. Paul presents the crescendo of the spiritual life as one of love, the most potent force in the universe, and the very issue of God’s eternal redemption of man.

The climax of the Holy Spirit’s role in Romans chapter 8 is clearly stated in verse 29, that the sons and daughters of God would be “conformed to the image of His Son.” This is the predestined decree of God and the resolute agenda of the Holy Spirit. From God’s perspective, we have been predestined to this glory. In our experience, however, it takes time and process for its manifestation. Essentially, time and process, therefore, serve the eternal purposes of God. What God does in us through the process has to match His eternal decree.

Time, among many things, is God’s servant to accomplish a transformative work in His children where all things work together for our good. The good, however, is not the exemption of difficulty but the conformation to the image of God’s Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. What Satan may intend for evil against God’s children, God is well able to triumph over through the image of His Son that can be wrought into us if we maintain our loving union with the Father.

In Romans 8:19-23, Paul slips into the tone of a Hebrew prophet of old, perhaps akin to that of Isaiah. As the Hebrew prophets prophesied a coming renewal of the heavens and the earth to spur the Israelites on towards godly living, Paul, likewise, predicts that a future restoration of the planet will follow the glorification of the children of God. He speaks with an eschatological hope and anticipation regarding the earth so that the Christians in Rome would persevere in their own suffering and trials. In the end, glorified believers will be entirely at home in the new heavens and the earth. Until that time, this fallen world is not their ultimate home. (And neither is it ours!)

In Romans 8:17-18, Paul introduces eschatological promises to the sons of God that endure through suffering. For Paul, Christian suffering is a given in Paul's perspective of the Christian life. Suffering can be expected, even among Christians, as long as we have two feet upon this earth. However, Paul is also quick to mention specific eschatological promises awaiting believers who stay hopeful in the fires of suffering. For the Roman Christians, suffering may not have been a reality they wanted to hear from Paul's pen. Like the Roman Christians, we need to both hear and receive this word on the eschatology of the suffering sons of God in our modern times.

Paul’s tone drastically changes in Romans 8:15 from that of the preceding chapters. He transitions from legal terms to tender terms, from words like “righteousness” to that of “Abba Father.” The picture is clear in Romans 8; all that God has legally accomplished to declare any sinner righteous can now be enjoyed through sonship and living in a familiar dynamic with God as Father.

God gave the apostle Paul a unique message that was unlike anything any prophet had ever conceived of. In fact, the message God entrusted to Paul completed all of the speaking of God regarding His purposes with man.
