In Romans 8:17-18, Paul introduces eschatological promises to the sons of God that endure through suffering. For Paul, Christian suffering is a given in Paul's perspective of the Christian life. Suffering can be expected, even among Christians, as long as we have two feet upon this earth. However, Paul is also quick to mention specific eschatological promises awaiting believers who stay hopeful in the fires of suffering. For the Roman Christians, suffering may not have been a reality they wanted to hear from Paul's pen. Like the Roman Christians, we need to both hear and receive this word on the eschatology of the suffering sons of God in our modern times.

Paul’s tone drastically changes in Romans 8:15 from that of the preceding chapters. He transitions from legal terms to tender terms, from words like “righteousness” to that of “Abba Father.” The picture is clear in Romans 8; all that God has legally accomplished to declare any sinner righteous can now be enjoyed through sonship and living in a familiar dynamic with God as Father.

God gave the apostle Paul a unique message that was unlike anything any prophet had ever conceived of. In fact, the message God entrusted to Paul completed all of the speaking of God regarding His purposes with man. The Christian life is about being in Christ, not about doing good. God’s economy is not about goodly people but about godly people. Phariseeism fixates on being “good” with the fruit of self-righteousness. The spiritual man fixates on Christ. Good is not the pursuit of the Christian but the fruit of living by the Holy Spirit. Without Christ, good is actually death, according to Paul. Are you a good person or a godly Christian?

Within every Christian, there are 3 “experts” at war. Each “expert” lives according to its own laws and regulations and constantly seeks to overthrow the others for its own purposes. As believers, we need to understand from Romans 8:5-9 that our mind plays a crucial role within the outcome of this internal conflict. We must “set our minds” according to the Spirit or according to the flesh. The results are diametrically opposed to one another!
